Oyster Sauce Topokki

As I mentioned earlier, Topokki or Dukbokki is a popular Korean street snack made of rice cake sticks and fish cakes.  This is my sweet and salty oyster sauce version of topokki.  I added Korean smoked fish ham, rice cake sticks, onion and fish cakes.

I sliced the rice cake sticks into half for faster cooking time.  This dish is more suitable for children or those who can't seem to take spicy food.

Ingredients:

  • About 1 bowl of rice cake sticks
  • 1/2 bowl of fish cakes
  • 1/2 bowl of Korean smoked fish ham, cubed
  • 1/4 onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp. dried chives
  • Toasted sesame seeds for garnish

Seasonings:

Oyster sauce, about 1 Tbsp.
Soy sauce, about 1/2 Tbsp.
Chinese rice wine, about 1 Tbsp.
Some cane sugar, 1 tsp.
A little sesame oil, 1 tsp.
White pepper, to suit

Method:

1.  In a frying pan, pan-fry the Korean smoked fish ham in a little oil until slightly brown.  Set aside.

2.  In the same frying pan, add in a little oil.  Then onion, stir-fry until slightly brown.  Add in the rice cake sticks and water.  Stir-well.  Add in seasonings and fish cakes.  Stir until the rice cake sticks are soften (add more water as needed).

3.  Add the smoked fish ham, stir to mix well.  Add dried chives, mix well.

4.  Pour on a plate and garnish with toasted sesame seeds.

  1. Thanks for this recipe. I was just in Korea (for 22 hours) and saw this but didn't get a chance to try it. Now I do!

  3. I cooked this recently and we ate in silence because we were so afraid of choking. The rice cake was too chewy for us. How should I prepare this?

  4. The experimental Cook, you can slice it into smaller pieces and keep adding water and cook it for a longer time. It would turn softer and less chewy.

  5. Oh...these would be perfect for my kids, who don't eat spicy food! But I LOVE the spicy version though. Guess I need to double the recipe and made a spicy version for me and hubby. :)
