Healthy Baked Donuts


Chocolate chips baked donuts, simply divine and oh so healthy! Made with yogurt and just 1 Tbsp. of oil!!

Hello pretty!

I bought two donut pans recently at a trip to the outlet mall. It was at a steal for $4 each, it was buy one gets one free deal you see, so without any hesitation I just grabbed the last two. I have been eyeing baked donut recipe for awhile and so glad that I finally got to make it. The original recipe is from My Culinary Journal. Thanks Peony for graciously sharing her baked donuts recipe. Below is my modified version with my signature twist to the usual baked donuts with icing topping. Each of my topping gave a little something special to this soft baked donuts and it was so easy to put together too. By the way, it would be delicious with peanut butter chips as well. Do not bake with any sprinkles or color coated chips as the color would run and the donuts would turn out looking ugly. See, why the other four of my donuts went missing? I used the color coated peanut butter chips and I learned a lesson out of it. *wink*

Ingredients :

(A)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup sugar
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt

(B)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tub (150 gm ) plain yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Toppings: sweeten coconut flakes & semi-sweet chocolate chips (or peanut butter chips)

Method :

1. In a big bowl, combine (A).

2. Push the flour to the side and in the center, add in (B). Mix (B) well with a spatula and mix the flour in to just combine. Set aside.

3. Spray the donut pan with nonstick cooking spray and divide the sweeten coconut flakes and chocolate chips at the bottom of each of the donut tube pans. Divide batter among pans. Place the batter only half full so that you will see donut hole when baked. 3/4 full will not be able to see any donut hole when baked.

4. Bake at 400°F for 10 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool for 5 minutes before removing from pans to wire rack.

~Yield 12-18 baked donuts

Note: Still soft the next day but best eaten on the day it was baked.

Beachlover, yup! it's time to use your donut pan. I know I saw you bought one last year. Mine got 12 holes too, so I get to bake two batches at one go (got two mah). Just use half the batter, then you will see the donut hole, 3/4 full you won't be able to see the donut hole anymore.

These donuts... they could the best. The coconut ones look fantastic. Adding yugurt and lemon juice sounds like they would have great texture and flavor.

These donuts are soft and airy. I finished the rest just now, a day after and still soft and good.

Hope your little girls have recovered. Mine had something like that too not too long ago. The doc said it in French - me catch no ball. :p She had terrible ulcer in her throat that the doc said to give her ice cream ... haha ... it was so bad that she didn't want to eat ice cream. :p

This look great and are certainly less unhealthy for you than the real thing. That being said, I don't think they can actually be deemed "healthy".

Since you mention that they are best eaten the day they're made, I'm guessing they get a bit drier as time goes by (as there isn't much fat in them). I think they'd hold up better with some soy flour added into the mix as it adds moistness to baked goods.

Yogurt is healthy right? It's made with yogurt, so I considered this healthy. Also, compared to those deep-fried, covered with sugar glaze or sweet/creme filling, this one is definitely way healthier.

Actually it is still soft the next day if it can last that long. I made those as gift (the latest post) so I didn't get to taste it the day before. But I assume the crunchy cereal might not be crunchy the next day. You can try with soy flour and let me know how's yours turned out.

hey, my name's Echo, yes, i really answer to it, anyway, im new to baking so i dont know all the science behind what goes with what, but im planning to try making these sugar free, forget all you artificial flavor haters, sucralose is my friend, flavored stevia is fun too, anyway, my question is this, can i refrigerate left over batter? fresh baked is always best, day of, preferably within a few hours, with only one exception in my experience, how ever unlike cookie dough which can be balled and frozen, some batters have to be used right away or not at all, save me some money and let me know up front (its tough to reduce a recipe that only calls for one egg, though there's always egg substitute i guess)

Hi Echo, I don't know the science behinds baking too. I also don't know whether you can freeze this batter. Why not you just bake it and freeze the donut instead?

I tried these today..got 12 fluffy pcs, my 4 yr old gorged on 3 of these, 5 yr old had 2, me 2 hubby 3 straight out of oven! Tks for the perfect bake temp/time..keeper recipe! I'm so excited to bake these donuts and try your healthy recipe! I'm a huge plain yogurt substituter when baking so I was thrilled to see that you are as well and that it works for donuts! One question though, I'm not a gram measurer and you can for a "tub of yogurt-150gm" Im a little confused because the conversion calculator i checked said it was a little over 4oz. What size "tub" are you referring to? Thanks!

I made this this morning. I only got 6 donuts, but they were the best donuts ever. I used lemon yogurt, and then used cream cheese frosting which I warmed a bit in the microwave. They are light and fluffy, and just the best with coffee.i

these are tasty! you can also heat up some icing and dunk them in it for the glazed look. i would recommend keeping a watchful eye though, because i took mine out at about the 5 minute mark and they were even done a bit too much. could be that i have a powerful oven. i even used strawberry yogurt for a twist :)

Hi, I was looking for a good recipe and I think this is a winner i did buy these pans a while ago with good intent on making baked doughnuts, we did move not to long ago and almost got rid of pans right now i can only find the one with out a hole in it but they were quite yummy and the kids like them too, I added you on my facebook and excited to try other recipes from you, thanks.

i love donuts and have not eaten one in a long time because i don't really like the store bought varieties. But this recipe is amazing! I so want to try baking some but dont have a donut baking tray, do you think it would be ok if i used muffin/ cup cake tray? Is the batter dry enough for me to roll into rings?

Hi Karen, you can use a muffin tray. The batter is not that dry that you can roll it, but you can try shape into a ring shape by dropping spoonful of batter onto a cookie sheet (I never try it before but think it might work).

Thks for ur recipe. I just bought a donut maker from Gwatch but there's no recipe. Tried out one recipe from Internet but it doesn't work out. Saw your recipe n tried it. It was great! Just that my maker doesn't even out the colour during the process and I can't put the chips on the base. I must mix them with the batter.

Thks for your receipe. I have tried it and the only problem I had is the donut toppings always stick to the donut pan especially the chocolate chip ones. I have used butter to line the pan instead of cooking spray. What could be the cause?
